The runes on the front and back covers read: ‘STAND BY THE GREY STONE WHEN THE THRUSH KNOCKS DURIN’S DAY WILL SHINE UPON THE KEYHOLE, TH (Thrór)’. (The rune for the letter H in ‘when‘ is lacking its crossbars; this was corrected in 2009).
