Text proper typeset as for the Houghton Mifflin 1967 Third Edition. Reprints the original First Edition text from Chapter 5: Riddles in the Dark and several of Tolkien’s early poems.

A Book Club Edition was published in October, 1989. It can be distinguished from the trade edition by differences to the copyright page (some lack a number line, others have a number line starting at ‘9’ as opposed to ‘M 10‘) and the lack of a price/ISBN on the dust-jacket’s front flap (some copies also state ‘Book Club Edition‘ on the bottom of the front flap). Additionally, the back cover of the jacket has a book club number (14652) and the book is bound in dark blue paper as opposed to the green paper and blue cloth spine used for the trade edition.
The runes bordering the dust-jacket read: ‘THE HOBBIT OR THERE AND BACK AGAIN BEING THE RECORD OF A YEARS JOURNEY MADE BY BILBO BAGGINS OF HOBBITON COMPILED FROM HIS MEMOIRS BY J.R.R. TOLKIEN AND PUBLISHED BY HOUGHTON MIFFLIN AND CO’.
Jacket price: $24.95.
*A different ISBN (0517029359) was used (by Random House Value Publishing) for remaindered copies of this edition that were sold at a discounted price from January, 1990.
