Three states have been seen and can be distinguished by minor differences on their copyright pages: the 1st State’s final line of text is ‘Printed in Singapore‘, the 2nd State ‘Printed and bound in Singapore‘ and the 3rd State ‘Printed and bound in Malaysia‘. The 2nd State began with the 6th? Printing, 2001 and the 3rd State began with the 8th Printing, 2011.
The runes bordering the dust-jacket read: ‘THE HOBBIT OR THERE AND BACK AGAIN BEING THE RECORD OF A YEARS JOURNEY MADE BY BILBO BAGGINS OF HOBBITON COMPILED FROM HIS MEMOIRS BY J.R.R. TOLKIEN AND PUBLISHED BY GEORGE ALLEN AND UNWIN LTD’. The incorrect publisher’s name was corrected to ‘HOUGHTON MIFFLIN AND CO‘ for the 19th Printing of the 1963 Second Edition but was (mistakenly?) not incorporated into the runic inscription for this edition.
