In use until at least the 172nd Printing (probably up to the 174th Printing).
Minor changes made to the covers include:
- The price was removed from the spine after the 132nd Printing but no later than the 135th Printing; other minor changes were occasionally made.
- The statement “Soon to be a major motion picture!” was added to the 157th Printing circa March, 2012 in pale blue letters against a black band. With the 158th Printing the letters were colored black against a yellow band and remained this way until the 168th Printing which reverted back to the original cover design.
- Price and text changes to the back cover.
RRP: $6.99; $7.99 (130th Printing); $8.99 after the 157th Printing but no later than the 162nd Printing. Sold in a set with various editions of The Lord of the Rings.
*With the 143rd or 144th Printing (2007) the stated ISBN-10 was replaced by the ISBN-13.
**There is a gap in the print numbers following the 52nd Printing. The subsequent printing (or 2nd thus) was the 116th Printing carrying on from the 2000 Del Rey Edition and sharing the final printing (116th) with this cover. From there, print numbers have ascended normally.
