Notes
20th Printing: March 3, 1988
In use from the 20th Printing until at least the 53rd Printing.
Also issued as a Book Club Edition. This can be distinguished from the trade edition by the lack of a number line on its copyright page.
For the 21st Printing, a barcode was added to the dust-jacket’s back cover. Further changes were made to the dust-jacket for the 22nd Printing (April, 1991) including the addition of the Tolkien monogram at the top of the spine.
On the copyright page for the 20th Printing (and the 1987 Revised Edition, 19th Printing before it), the copyright date for Douglas A. Anderson’s ‘Note on the Text’ is given as 1986. This was changed to 1987 for the 21st Printing and all printings afterwards (the ‘Note’ was written in 1986 and first published in 1987).
The runes on the front cover of the dust-jacket read (in order of top, bottom, right side, left side): ‘ONE RING TO RULE THEM ALL, ONE RING TO FIND THEM, ONE RING TO BRING THEM ALL AND, IN THE DARKNESS BIND THEM’.
Jacket price: $16.95; $18.95 with the 22nd Printing; $21.95 by the 32nd Printing; $22.00 by the 36th Printing. Sold in a set with The Two Towers and The Return of the King.
