2. Page 229 is undamaged.
All 1st Printings have a misprint on page 3 (‘Father Giles‘ for ‘Farmer Giles‘); this was corrected for the 2nd Printing.
Also issued as a Book Club Edition. This can be distinguished from the trade edition by having one or more of the following: a blind stamp on the back board, no price on the inside jacket flap, no ISBN on the jacket’s back cover The copyright pages are identical to the trade edition (some printings show a gutter code). A similar book club edition was published the following year: 1978 Book Club Edition.
Jacket price: $10.95. In 1981 surplus copies of this edition were remaindered at a sale price of $3.98 (Beyond Bree, September 1981, p. 9).
*The first four printings were printed before publication.
**A total of five variants have been noted in Hammond’s Bibliography with the first being a publisher’s advance copy. Of the other four, one is as variant 2 above while the other three are subtle variations within variant 1 above concerning the color of the paper and color of the gold/silver/copper stamping on the binding.
