Shortly after this book was bound, Grafton Books (Tolkien’s UK paperback publisher in 1991) notified Houghton Mifflin that the copyright notice needed altering. The use of the words ‘New Reset Format’ (though acceptable under UK copyright law) were not permissible in the US being that they would not protect the copyright to the underlying work. In other words, any edition prior to the ‘New Reset Format’ would not be protected. Therefore an adhesive label was added to the copyright page correcting the error (a small number of copies have however been seen without the label).
